A Little Scared
==========

I thought I'd share a story that happened to me; it proves what
the Grace of God and a touch of a friend can do.

I had been suffering from a hernia for about a year. I was 47
years old and a big chicken. I knew it required surgery. I was
afraid of not only the surgery but the location of the surgery.

After the urging of an old high school friend Susan (maybe
demanding would be a better word), I went to see a doctor.

I have been in a recovery program for 19 years. I have great
faith, but I am human. I put my fears in God's hands and went
to see the doctor.

As always on the forms that you must fill out, I put down that I was
in recovery. After all the preliminary things were done, the
doctor came in looking at my chart. He asked me how long I had
been in recovery, I told him, he then stuck out his hand and
told me he has been in recovery for 16 years.

All the fears and anxiety melted away.

The day before surgery, Susan made a trip of 1000 miles to be
with me during the surgery. I remember how comforting it was to
have someone so special with me during this time.

I remember laying there in pre-op, waiting to be taken into
surgery. To say I wasn't nervous would be a lie. Susan
stood there knowing my fear and never thinking how silly it
really was.

She rubbed my hands and arms and smiled and even made me laugh.

I was rolled into surgery joking and laughing with the nurses.

The next thing I knew it was all over, I had survived. Susan
stayed with me for a week until she had to get back home.
I look back on the ordeal and it is now a fond memory. It's a
memory of how God uses people to help others.

I can laugh about being scared today, but the feelings were real
at the time. God understands that and is there to help us.

He always gives us what we need.
