The Copy
=======

"Did you lock the copy machine?" Puddin asked.

My wife was struggling trying to open the lid on the multi-
purpose printer-copier that we have.

She yanked and yanked before asking me had I done something to
lock the copier.

"It doesn't have a lock," I replied.

"Well it's locked," Puddin retorted.

I remembered Josees, our two-year-old son, at the copy machine
earlier in the day and had a funny feeling about that memory.

"Just yank it a little harder," I told Puddin.

She yanked much harder and sloooowly the copier lid opened.

It appeared to be held fast by a thick and strong rubber band.

Puddin peered closer at the copier.

The closer she got, the larger the frown on her face became.

"JOSEES!" she exclaimed.

"Did you put chewing gum on the copier?" she said pointing to
the thick red mess.

"Yes" he proudly answered.

He showed her the paper copy of the nice disk that was now
evident to be chewing gum.

"Nathaniel, did you let him put chewing gum on the copier?"

"Of course not," I answered.

I didn't bother to mention that I saw Josees making a copy of
what I thought was a red plastic disk.

That's what I let him make a copy of.
A red plastic disk.
Not chewing gum.

I wasn't absolutely certain that the red disk that I saw was
chewing gum. I had a sinking feeling about it, but I wasn't
certain so give me the benefit of the doubt.

It took Puddin the better part of 15 minutes to get that gum off
of the copier.

She muttered and scraped as I sat there with an astounded and
befuddled look on my face. Befuddled looks are useful at times.

I did think it was a red plastic disk.

You have to have children to understand how something like that
could happen. They think of things that adults can't fathom.

That's what creativity is made from.

My wife scooped up Josees and went to record a program that she
wanted to keep on videotape.

"Nathaniel!!!"

"What is this in the VCR?" she asked as she felt resistance as
she tried to push a blank tape in.

I remembered Josees at the VCR earlier and had another funny
feeling about that memory.

He was only putting what looked like one of his orange colored
cartoon tapes in the VCR so there was nothing to worry about.

"Nathaniel!!!"

"Did you lock the VCR?"
