Grilled Cheese
==========

The waitress comes over and recognizes the family seated at the
table - Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their little son, Jonathan. She
says, "Jonathan, what would you like?"

He says, "I'll have a grilled cheese sandwich."

She says, "Jonathan, I'm sorry, we don't serve grilled cheese
sandwiches."

He says, "You have a grill, don't you?"

She says, "Yes."

He says, "You have cheese, don't you?"

She says, "Yes."

He says, "You have bread, don't you?"

She says, "Yes."

He says, "Well, I'll have a grilled cheese sandwich."

This kid is four years old!

The waitress says, "Jonathan, I'll go see if the chef will fix
you a grilled cheese sandwich."

She comes back in a little while and says, "Okay, Jonathan, the
chef agreed to fix you a grilled cheese sandwich. I forgot to
ask you, though, what you want to drink."

He says, "I'll have a milkshake."

She says, "Jonathan, your parents have probably already told
you we don't serve milkshakes." (She was ready for him this
time.) "Now, it is true we have milk. And it is true we have
ice cream. But we don't have the syrup."

He says, "You have a car, don't you?"

The Dream
========

It was an early Sunday morning before the sun was yet to make
its presence known.

I dreamed.

The dream was vivid. A dream so real that when I awoke I knew
it wasn't an ordinary dream.

I was in a church.

I was the Pastor of the church.

That isn't an unusual thing to dream since I am the Pastor of a
church. The thing was, this wasn't my church.

I had never seen the building. There was a large crowd of
people, I had never seen any of the faces. I was the Pastor,
I was sure of it, yet I was near the back of the church.

When the time for me to speak neared, I walked to the front.
While standing, I placed my right hand on the wall just to lean
against it.

The wall tore like thin newspaper. I was busy trying to put the
wall back together but each time I tried to tape it up it just
tore more. I gave up trying to fix the wall and just settled on
delivering my sermon.

I woke up.

I had a very strong feeling that what I had just experienced was
no ordinary dream. Many of you know the type. The dream clung
to me like wet clothes, but I couldn't fathom it's meaning.

A church that I had never seen filled with unfamiliar faces with
walls made out of paper?

What in the world did that mean?

I lay back in the still morning. The fresh air from the outside
poured over me but the dream was still as dark a mystery as the
night sky.

I drifted off and went back to sleep.

As I awoke and began preparation to go and minister to the
church that I was familiar with, and a congregation where I did
know the faces, the light came on.

Not a physical light, but the light of understanding.

As if in an instant, like quick flash of lightning that lets you
see your situation, I understood the dream perfectly.

I understood what was being spiritually revealed.

It was a church with a location that I had never seen.
It had a congregation that I had never seen.
I sat near the back until I spoke.
It had no walls.

It was MountainWings.

That dream was on Sunday, July 29, 2001.
MountainWings was much smaller, an infant of just seven months.
MountainWings has many more subscribers now but on that
date MountainWings had approximately 38,000 subscribers.

A congregation of 38,000.

38,000 faces that I would not recognize even if all 38,000 were
assembled in one place.

I would not recognize the 38,000 but neither would the 38,000
recognize me. I sat near the back, just one of the crowd,
unknown by face or name.

There are no walls with MountainWings.
No building, parking, restrooms, or television cameras.

There have been so many of you who have written with the
testimonies of how MountainWings has been the instrument that
has given you the hope and inspiration to make it and become
better. That's all a church is about.

Helping you to make it and become better.
That's a short sentence with a long meaning.
Helping you to make it and become better.

It boils down to that.

to help you make it here on earth.
to help you make it into heaven.
to help make you better,
so that you can help make others better.

That's what it boils down to,

With or without walls.

Amen
