Gnats
====

"Mr. Bronner, where do gnats come from?"

It was a question the babysitter asked me.

It was a hot day as the boys were playing outside, the annoying
but harmless insects called gnats flew around her head like
planes in a holding pattern at the airport.

Gnats have always been here.
I've seen loads of them each summer from the earliest days that
I could remember.

They have always been like many of the things of life, annoying
but rather harmless.

Many people seem to think that I know everything.

My wife will often ask me questions as if I have the
encyclopedia photocopied in my head, any page readily available
and fetched easily by thought.

I racked my brain and flipped through the pages of the limited
mental encyclopedia that I did possess. The gnat file came up
empty. I had absolutely no idea where gnats came from.

"I don't know," I said.

It was another of those MountainWings Moments.

Although I am a preacher, I am a scientist by education and
nature. I like to know the how and the why of things.
I understand many of the technical things of the world, but here
I was absolutely dumbfounded by the origin of one of the
simplest of the ever-present warm weather creatures, the gnat.

I didn't know where gnats came from and I still don't know,
but I do know one thing about them.

They aren't going anywhere soon.

I have never felt a gnat bite. I don't believe they have
stingers or teeth or anything else that hurts. They are more of
a nuisance than anything else.

I also know life is full of gnats.

Things that don't bite, they don't hurt, they can't hurt, but
they annoy. The gnats of life.

Far too often we spend our focus and energy fanning away at
gnats. We get frustrated, angry, intolerant and swing away
wildly and vainly at the gnats of life.

When will they go away?

They will go away when things cool down.
They will go away when you cool down.

Do you ever notice the hotter you get the more gnats are
attracted to you? Cool down and watch the gnats diminish.

That's the truth. Straight from the encyclopedia Bronnannica.
