The Alaskan Chronicles - It's Always Something
=============================
"It's always something," was a phrase made popular by the late
comedienne Gilda Radner who played Roseanne Roseannadanna on
Saturday Night Live. Gilda died of ovarian cancer at 42.
During my recent trip to Alaska the phrase came to mind while
listening to the guide, Jessie. Jessie was expounding on the low
crime rate in Alaska. "Most don't lock their doors here,"
she explained.
Many of the Alaskan towns have the feel and population of early
American towns. Quaint and quiet they feel like a page out of
history. It's truly wonderful.
"We don't have to worry much about crime," she said, "but we do
have a few other worries," she said.
This was her story:
"Just recently as I was walking on the street, I saw a bear that
had overturned a garbage can and was eating from it. The bear
stopped eating and looked at me. He then turned and ran towards
me. The experts say that if a bear charges you that you
shouldn't run because bears can run up to 40 miles per hour so
you can't outrun them.
I knew that I wasn't supposed to run but I ran anyway. There
was a car in a nearby driveway and I ran to the car and pulled
on the door handle. It was unlocked so I jumped in. As soon as
I closed the door the bear's paws hit the window. The bear could
have easily broken the window but it just scraped its paws against
the window for a few seconds and then walked away. I stayed in
that car for about 30 minutes to make sure the bear was gone."
Jessie then began to quote the year's toll on people in Anchorage
killed and mauled by bears. It really wasn't that many, only
four people killed and two seriously mauled by bears and
Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska.
ONLY six reported bear attacks! Only six!
Six is not statistically a big number but you need to read
"Life's A Beach" to understand the power of six.
Beautiful place Alaska.
Beautiful people.
Peaceful.
Low crime rate.
Remember if in Alaska and you see a bear and it charges you and
there's a nearby car and you think that you can make it to the
car before the bear makes it to you that due to the low crime
rate the car door will probably be unlocked.
It's always something.
